Mix of millet and sorghum that will create a magnet for ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. Can be planted in impoundments or around ponds to create a duck hole like no other

Want to create opportunities for duck hunting on your property?

It’s easier than you might think.

Impoundments are nothing more than a shallow wet season pond that can be drained during the summer. This mix is designed to be planted in or around duck impoundments and ponds and can be flooded to provide a magnet for waterfowl.

The grains in this mix have been selected to hang around late into the year without breaking down to ensure you still have plenty of food by duck season. A flooded field of this mix provides excellent habitat for waterfowl. Puddle ducks like mallards, black ducks, and wood ducks are especially fond of this mix.

Ingredients:

2 Millets

Grain Sorghum

Buckwheat

How we formulated this mix:

The specific millet and sorghum included here has excellent traits for waterfowl plantings specifically. All 3 hold on the stalk well and do not deteriorate quickly in wet conditions, a must when planting for waterfowl. Many other grains fall too quickly and rot before waterfowl season begins in most states. Buckwheat helps provide both grain and some forage potential to make this mix more appealing to a wide range of waterfowl species. Wild rice was omitted in favor of sorghum and millet as both are easier and more reliable to grow especially for those new to planting.

WHERE TO PLANT: Best in full sun. Stands up well to flooding. Great for low areas that flood seasonally or man-made waterfowl impoundments.

pH: 5.0-7.5

MINIMUM SOIL FERTILITY NEEDED: Moderate

WHEN TO PLANT:

Plant 90-120 days before the average first frost in your area

SOIL PREP: Disc, tiller, plow, or no-till planter. Best when lightly covered at appropriate depth but can be no-till broadcast if needed, just expect thinner stands/mixed results.

PLANTING DEPTH: 1/4 - 1/2 in

FERTILIZER: For best results use the Whitetail Hill Soil Test and apply fertilizer as recommended by the test - Order at WhitetailHill.com

Build a duck hole

Make your own duck hole — it's easier than you think.

An impoundment is just a shallow seasonal pond you can drain in summer. Plant this millet-and-sorghum blend in or around it, then flood it, and you've got a magnet for ducks, geese, and other waterfowl.

The grains here were picked to hang on the stalk late into the year without breaking down in wet conditions — so you still have plenty of food when duck season opens. Mallards, black ducks, and wood ducks are especially fond of it.

Built to perform

Engineered for the flood

Holds up when flooded
These grains stay on the stalk in wet conditions instead of rotting before season like ordinary grains.
A waterfowl magnet
Heavy grain production puddle ducks — mallards, blacks, wood ducks — can't resist.
Easy and reliable
Millet and sorghum are far easier to establish than wild rice, even if you've never planted for ducks.

Dead simple to plant

Three steps to a duck magnet

1
Prep the seedbed
Disc, till, or plow — or go no-till and just rake/lightly expose the soil. Then smooth and firm it down.
2
Sow the seed
Cover lightly at the right depth — ¼–½". Can be no-till broadcast if needed (expect thinner stands).
3
Press it in
Cultipack or drive over the plot to press the seed into the soil for good seed-to-soil contact. That's all it needs.

Questions, answered

How much does it cover?
The grip jug (4.7 lb) covers 1/4 acre. The 18.3 lb bucket covers up to 1 acre.
When do I plant and flood it?
Plant 90–120 days before your average first frost so the grain matures, then flood the impoundment ahead of season. The grains hold up in water so the food's still there when ducks arrive.
Is the seed tested?
Yes. Every batch is third-party tested for purity and germination before it’s ever shipped out, so you know exactly what you’re planting — no filler.
How fast do I get it?
Most orders ship within 1 business day (all within 3 at the latest). From there it travels UPS Ground — typically 2–4 business days in the lower 48, so most orders arrive in about a week. You’ll get tracking by email the moment it leaves our dock.

This is only two weeks of growth! Planted August 10th, 2025. It seems to grow really well in the soft, wet swamp mud. It doesn't grow well in standing water (2-3 inches deep). We broadcasted it and stomped the seeds into the mud. Has received 3-4 inches of rain over two weeks Seeds get about 8-9 hours of sun daily Temperatures ranging highs of 90-98 daily Harvest, AL

I’m in southern Mississippi, I planted the Waterfowl mix next to a swamp channel that floods and recedes a few times through the summer, the whistler ducks in the area are tearing it up. I Definitely will buy again. Great product and quick shipping.

So far so good it appears. The buckwheat came up nicely, the millet has not headed out yet, hope it’s not grass but I think we are in good shape. Time will tell. Thank you for the quick turnaround on delivery for we added another spot to plant for later season

Waterfowl Blend

I’ve not used it yet

Waterfowl Blend

It’s coming in lush and vigorously. The wildlife hasn’t discovered it yet but by all appearances it should do well. Right now there’s an abundance of natural forage.

Waterfowl Blend

Hand-tossed around the perimeter of my farm pond on the high side where I had some erosion. Seeded quickly and fill in the bare areas. I have already bought other blends for my farmhouse property. Thanks!

Waterfowl Blend

I haven't had a chance to get it in the ground. Hopefully the results are great and I'll send you pics of success.

Waterfowl Blend

Like this very much, planted two weeks ago on my ranch around a newly dug pond . Planted in a field next to the pond , we already have wood ducks landing in the new pond , so all that food is going to help out greatly! I show it to my cousins and l , think he ordered some more of the Kill plot to do a plot around the deer feeders to be planted later on in the season. Thanks again for a great product! Will probably order more for the up and coming season!

Waterfowl Blend

Crop has good looking seed heads

Waterfowl Blend

It’s starting to grow around my pond after this last couple weeks of rain. We will see if it makes it to seed.

Waterfowl Blend

Can’t wait to get it in the ground

Waterfowl Blend

Put seed down before a rain and results have been impressive. Hopefully we get regular rains to keep the growth going.

Waterfowl Blend

We like the mix going to plant it early spring and then going to buy more to plant late summer for fall

Waterfowl Blend

Will plant in spring but am excited to see it grow

Waterfowl Blend

Starting to come up, just need the rain to do the rest

Waterfowl Blend

Due to lack of water, growth is stunted but will definitely be a keeper plot!!
